Overview

What it is.

Spot UV — short for spot ultraviolet varnish — is the process of applying a high-gloss, raised varnish to selected areas of a printed sheet. The varnish is applied as a liquid, then cured under UV light, leaving a glass-smooth, slightly raised gloss finish in the design areas. The rest of the sheet is typically matte (often with a matte or soft-touch laminate), creating a high-contrast interaction between the two surfaces.\n\nSpot UV is the finish that defines contemporary premium packaging. It is the dominant finish in beauty, skincare, and tech accessories — anywhere the design wants to draw the eye to a logo, a product name, or a pattern element with the highest possible contrast against a matte field.

When to use spot UV

Spot UV is the right finish when the design has one or two elements that need to pop off a matte field. A logo on a soft-touch carton, a product name on a matte black box, a pattern element that needs a tactile-glossy edge — these are the applications where spot UV earns its cost.

Spot UV is the most accessible of the premium finishes. It does not require a die (it uses a screen or digital plate), it does not require a separate stamping pass (it can be run inline on the press), and the setup cost is low relative to foil stamping or embossing. For brands moving into premium packaging for the first time, spot UV is the entry point.

Avoid spot UV on uncoated or kraft substrates (the varnish pools on the rough surface), on very small details below 0.5mm, and on areas that need to be writable (the varnish resists pen ink).

Spot UV + soft-touch: the contemporary premium default

The combination of spot UV on a soft-touch laminate is the most-requested finish combination in the contemporary premium packaging market. The soft-touch film absorbs light and creates a velvety surface; the spot UV adds a high-gloss accent that the eye cannot miss; the contrast is what makes the package feel modern.

This combination works for almost every product category — beauty, skincare, fragrance, supplements, tech accessories, premium food and beverage. The setup cost is moderate; the perceived value is high. For brands that want a single finish combination that works across product lines, this is the safest choice.

Frequently asked

Questions about spot uv.

What is the difference between spot UV and flood UV?

Spot UV is applied to selected areas only. Flood UV is applied to the entire sheet. Spot UV is for contrast; flood UV is for an all-over gloss effect.

Can spot UV be combined with foil stamping?

Yes — foil and spot UV are run in separate passes. The combination is striking on dark substrates with metallic foil logos.

What is the minimum line weight for spot UV?

0.5mm. Below that, the varnish loses its raised edge and the gloss effect diminishes.

Is spot UV food-safe?

Yes — the cured varnish is inert. For direct food contact, we can use a food-grade UV varnish.

How much does spot UV setup cost?

$80–150 for a screen or digital plate. Lower than foil stamping or embossing, which is why spot UV is the entry-level premium finish.

Can spot UV be applied to dark substrates?

Yes — spot UV on matte black is one of the most popular combinations. The gloss catches light and makes the spot UV area appear to glow.
