Overview

What it is.

Soft-touch lamination is the application of a thin, matte BOPP or PET film to the surface of a printed sheet. The film has a soft, velvety texture — close to a peach skin or suede — that absorbs light and creates a surface that is unmistakably premium to the touch.\n\nSoft-touch is the dominant finish of the contemporary premium packaging era. It has replaced the older high-gloss laminate as the default for cosmetics, skincare, fragrance, supplements, and tech accessories. The consumer's first contact with a package is almost always tactile; soft-touch makes that first contact feel considered.

When to use soft-touch lamination

Soft-touch is the right finish for almost every premium product category. Beauty, skincare, fragrance, supplements, tech accessories, premium food and beverage, jewelry, fashion accessories — all of these are better with soft-touch lamination than with the older high-gloss alternative.

The finish is also forgiving in design: it does not show fingerprints, it does not glare under retail lighting, and it makes every color in the print look more refined. For brands that have to ship product across global supply chains, soft-touch is also more durable than high-gloss — it does not scratch or scuff as easily.

Avoid soft-touch on designs that depend on color vibrancy (the matte film desaturates slightly) and on budgets that cannot absorb the per-unit cost (soft-touch is approximately 15–20% more expensive than gloss lamination).

Soft-touch vs other laminations

High-gloss lamination: the older standard. Reflective, vibrant, durable, but visually dated for most premium categories. Still the right choice for mass-market consumer goods, for designs that depend on photographic vibrancy, and for budgets that need the lowest-cost laminate option.

Matte lamination: similar to soft-touch in reflectivity, but without the velvety texture. Matte laminate is the right choice for brands that want a more subtle tactile effect (or no tactile effect) at a lower cost than soft-touch.

Soft-touch lamination: the contemporary premium default. The velvety texture is what makes it distinctive; the finish is what makes a package feel modern.

For brands that need the maximum durability, we offer soft-touch with a scuff-resistant overcoat — a small additional cost, but the right call for products that will see heavy retail handling.

Frequently asked

Questions about soft-touch lamination.

What is soft-touch lamination made of?

A thin BOPP or PET film with a matte, textured surface. The film is bonded to the printed sheet with adhesive under heat and pressure.

Is soft-touch recyclable?

It depends on the local recycling infrastructure. In most US and EU markets, paper with plastic laminate must have the film removed before recycling. We can supply recyclable soft-touch options on request.

Can soft-touch be combined with foil stamping?

Yes — foil is applied first, then the laminate is applied over the entire sheet. The foil is sealed under the laminate, which protects it from scratching.

Can soft-touch be combined with spot UV?

Yes — this is the most popular premium combination. The soft-touch creates a matte field, the spot UV adds a high-gloss accent on selected areas.

Does soft-touch scratch easily?

No — soft-touch is more scratch-resistant than high-gloss. The matte texture hides minor scuffs. For maximum durability, we offer a scuff-resistant overcoat.

How much does soft-touch lamination cost?

Approximately 15–20% more than high-gloss lamination, depending on volume. The cost is offset by the premium positioning it provides.
