Overview

What it is.

Rigid board — sometimes called greyboard, set-up board, or chipboard — is a dense, paper-based structural substrate made from compressed recycled paper fiber. Unlike folding cartons, rigid board does not fold flat: the box is constructed by wrapping printed art paper around a pre-cut greyboard shell, then assembling by hand or machine.\n\nThe result is a box with the weight, feel, and presence of a hardcover book. It is the format used by every luxury brand from jewelry to high-end electronics, by the wine and spirits industry for presentation cases, and by ecommerce brands that want a packaging experience that earns an unboxing video.

Why rigid board is the premium default

Rigid board boxes cost more per unit than folding cartons — typically 2–5× the per-unit cost depending on size and finish — but the perceived value they create is also 2–5× higher. In markets where packaging is the first physical touchpoint with the brand, that is not a cost. It is a marketing investment.

The construction also allows for closures and features that are simply not possible in folding cartons: magnetic closures, ribbon pulls, drawer-and-shell mechanisms, lift-off lids with foam or molded pulp inserts. The structural rigidity of the board means these features work reliably over hundreds of openings, where folding carton closures wear out in dozens.

Sustainability of rigid board

The greyboard core is 100% recycled fiber, typically post-consumer. The art paper wrap can be FSC-certified on request, and the entire construction is curbside recyclable after the magnetic strip is removed (we offer a magnet-free construction for brands that want true end-of-life recyclability).

For brands with strong sustainability positioning, we also offer a 100% unbleached kraft wrap on greyboard — the natural brown exterior with a clean interior, no chlorine bleach in the production chain.

Frequently asked

Questions about rigid board.

Can rigid board boxes ship flat?

No — rigid board is constructed (not folded), so it ships fully assembled. This increases shipping volume; we recommend master-pack optimization for ocean freight.

What is the MOQ for custom rigid boxes?

50 units is our standard MOQ across all formats. Below that, digital tooling and setup costs make per-unit pricing prohibitive.

How thick is the board?

1.5mm for small boxes (jewelry), 2.0mm for standard gift and magnetic, 3.0mm for large presentation cases.

Can you do a magnetic closure?

Yes — the standard closure on our magnetic box line. We can also do ribbon, tuck-in, and lift-off lid closures.

Is the board recyclable?

The greyboard core is 100% recyclable. The art paper wrap is recyclable. The magnetic strip must be removed before recycling.

Do you offer custom inserts?

Yes — molded pulp, EVA foam, satin-lined cavities, and bespoke cardboard fitments. Inserts are quoted separately.
