How to choose the right custom box material for your product
A 12-minute guide to picking between rigid, folding carton, corrugated and kraft — based on product weight, retail channel and brand positioning.
Why material choice matters
Material is the first thing your customer feels. It is also the largest determinant of cost, MOQ, lead time and sustainability. The right material for a luxury fragrance launch is rarely the right material for a DTC snack subscription. This guide walks through the four main families of paper packaging and when to choose each.
Rigid boxes — the luxury standard
Rigid set-up boxes are made from 1.5–3mm greyboard wrapped in printed or specialty paper. They hold their shape, accept magnetic and hinged closures, and ship flat or pre-assembled. Choose rigid for luxury retail, gifting, fragrance, jewelry and electronics. MOQ starts at 50 units. Lead time is 18–25 business days.
Folding cartons — the retail workhorse
Folding cartons are flat-printed sheets that are die-cut, creased, folded and glued. Made from SBS, kraft or CCNB, they are the most cost-effective retail format. Choose folding cartons for retail shelves, beauty, food, supplements. MOQ starts at 50 units. Lead time is 12–18 business days.
Corrugated mailers — the ecommerce workhorse
Corrugated mailers are built from E-flute or B-flute corrugated board. They are the only packaging format engineered for shipping. Choose mailers for DTC ecommerce, subscription boxes, apparel and any product that ships directly to consumers. MOQ starts at 50 units with digital print. Lead time is 10–18 business days.
Kraft paper — for bags and lightweight formats
Kraft paper is the most sustainable format. Used for shopping bags, food bags, and lightweight wraps. Choose kraft for grocery, coffee, snacks, and any brand positioning itself around sustainability. MOQ starts at 50 units. Lead time is 12–18 business days.
A simple decision framework
Ask four questions: (1) Does it ship directly to a consumer? Choose corrugated. (2) Does it sit on a retail shelf? Choose folding carton. (3) Is it a luxury gift or jewelry item? Choose rigid.
